Overview
A 4-day private journey from the Xijiang Miao megavillage to UNESCO Fanjingshan's floating summit, the Tongren Grand Canyon and the riverside lantern town of Fenghuang.
About This Tour
This 4-day private tour for your group only links three of southwest China's most striking sights with an English-speaking guide and private vehicle. You begin at Xijiang Qianhu, the largest Miao village in the world, a hillside of a thousand timber stilt houses that blaze with light after dark, where you join a long-table banquet and the famous 'high mountain flowing water' toasting ritual. Next you ascend Fanjingshan, a UNESCO World Heritage peak in the clouds, riding the cableway to the surreal Mushroom Rock and the Red Cloud Golden Summit that seems to float above a sea of mist. You then walk the cliff-side boardwalks of the Tongren Grand Canyon before crossing into west Hunan to Fenghuang, an ancient town of stilt houses mirrored in the Tuojiang River, lantern-lit bridges and the former homes of writer Shen Congwen. This moderate cultural journey suits travelers who want a rich mix of ethnic Miao culture, a world-class sacred mountain and one of China's most romantic old towns. Best in spring and autumn for clear mountain views. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: Mar-May and Sep-Nov for clear skies on Fanjingshan • Fitness level: moderate; cableway plus stair climbing at the summit and canyon boardwalks • Fanjingshan summit can be cold, windy and misty even in summer; bring layers • Sun protection, comfortable shoes and rain gear advised • Riverside paths and the canyon boardwalk can be slippery; mind your footing • High-speed trains connect Duyun and Fenghuang with Guangzhou and Shenzhen
Itinerary
1
Day 1: Arrival | Xijiang Thousand-Household Miao Village
Meet your guide at Duyun East station by 13:00 (high-speed trains arrive from Guangzhou and Shenzhen around midday) and drive about 2 hours to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village to check in. In the afternoon you explore the core of the world's largest Miao village on foot, strolling both banks of the Baishui River and its seven wind-and-rain bridges, where bridges one and five are quieter and perfect for reflections of the stilt houses; you can wander the old street tasting Miao snacks such as rice tofu and bamboo-tube rice, and optionally rent traditional Miao dress for photos. In the evening you share a Miao long-table banquet with the lively 'high mountain flowing water' toasting ritual and folk song-and-dance, then head to a viewpoint to see the whole village light up like stars fallen into the valley. Meals: dinner included. Overnight: hotel in Xijiang Miao Village.

Day 2: Fanjingshan | The Floating Golden Summit
After breakfast you drive about 3 hours to the east gate of Fanjingshan, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain, with time to rest or watch the mountain scenery along the way. Arriving around 11:00 you ride the cableway up to the core scenic area and explore its otherworldly summit features, including Pudu Square, the precariously balanced Mushroom Rock, Old Golden Summit and the famous Red Cloud Golden Summit that rises like an island above a churning sea of cloud, rewarding the climb with an 'all peaks below' panorama. In the late afternoon you take the cableway down and check into a hotel at the foot of the mountain. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: hotel near Fanjingshan.

Day 3: Tongren Grand Canyon | On to Fenghuang
After breakfast you drive about 1.5 hours to the Tongren Grand Canyon, where for around 1.5 hours you follow gentle cliff-side boardwalks past a slot-canyon 'one line of sky,' water-curtain caves and clear pools, an easy and scenic walk. Around midday you stop for a free lunch near the canyon exit, with local specialties such as Tongren she-rice and cudweed cakes recommended. In the early afternoon you continue about 1 hour to Fenghuang ancient town and check into accommodation within the old town. With your bags down you are free to wander: visit the former homes of writer Shen Congwen and statesman Xiong Xiling, step across the Tuojiang stepping-stones, take a boat on the river to hear boatmen's mountain songs and watch the stilt-house lights reflected on the water, and climb the Nanhua Bridge for the classic night view. An optional waterborne performance recreates local legend. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: hotel in Fenghuang ancient town.

Day 4: Fenghuang Morning | Departure
Enjoy a relaxed morning with a sleep-in and breakfast before a free half-day in Fenghuang. You might photograph the misty Tuojiang from the North Gate tower when the crowds are thin, take in the full panorama from the Rainbow Bridge gallery, explore the old lanes, ancestral halls and city wall, or browse the Hongqiao market for local handicrafts and souvenirs. After a self-arranged lunch you transfer to Fenghuang ancient town station for departure, timed to your train (allow about 1 hour before departure). Your guide will confirm the schedule and assist with the transfer. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: not included (tour ends in Fenghuang).
