Overview
A guided three-day ascent of 5,396 m Haba Snow Mountain — China's classic entry-level glaciated peak, with crampons, ice axe and an Alpine dawn summit.
About This Tour
Standing directly across the thundering Tiger Leaping Gorge from the famous Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Haba Snow Mountain (Habaxue Shan) rises to 5,396 m and is widely regarded as China's best entry-level mountaineering peak — the ideal first real glaciated summit for fit, ambitious trekkers. This is a genuine snow climb, not a walk-up: the final push crosses a glacier on a roped team using crampons and an ice axe, led by certified high-altitude mountain guides. Over three days you trek from Haba village through pine and rhododendron forest to a high base camp, acclimatise, then make a pre-dawn Alpine-start summit bid up snow slopes to a roof-of-the-world panorama spanning Yunnan's great peaks, the Yangtze gorge far below and, on a clear morning, the sacred Meili (Kawagebo) range glowing on the horizon. No prior technical experience is required, but solid fitness, a head for cold and a willingness to learn basic glacier skills are essential. Includes guides, technical gear and oxygen support. A private, per-person summit expedition. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations. Good to know: • Best season: April-May and October-November for the most stable weather and good snow; the summit is weather-dependent and may not be reached • Altitude: summit 5,396 m, base camp around 4,100 m — serious altitude; acclimatisation and a slow, steady pace are critical and oxygen is carried for emergencies • Fitness level: challenging — you must be in strong physical condition and comfortable with a 6-10 hr pre-dawn summit day on snow • Technical gear: this is a glaciated climb requiring crampons and ice axe; technical equipment and instruction are provided, but rigid mountaineering boots and warm summit clothing are your responsibility • Insurance: high-altitude mountaineering insurance is mandatory • Cold: expect well-below-freezing temperatures, wind and pre-dawn starts; the summit is never guaranteed and safety decisions rest with the lead guide

Day 1: Haba Village to Base Camp|Forest Climb & Gear Check
From Haba village (approx. 2,700 m) on the slopes above Tiger Leaping Gorge, we begin the ascent to high base camp. Today's trek covers about 8-10 km over 5-6 hrs, climbing roughly 1,400 m through fragrant pine and rhododendron forest, past meadows and a sacred spring, with pack-horses carrying the heavy loads while you walk light. The forest gradually thins to alpine scrub as we gain the cirque holding base camp at around 4,100 m. On arrival the guides run a full gear check and a practical session on crampon use, ice-axe technique and roped-team movement so the team is ready for the summit bid. A hot dinner and an early night follow at our base-camp lodge/tents. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Day 2: Summit Day|Alpine Start, Glacier & 5,396 m Summit
The big day begins with an Alpine start around 02:00-03:00 by headtorch. Roped into teams and wearing crampons, we climb steadily from base camp up snow slopes and onto the upper glacier, gaining roughly 1,300 m over a demanding 5-7 hrs of ascent. The guides set the pace and fix the route across crevassed sections; ice axe and rope are used throughout. We aim to reach the 5,396 m summit near sunrise for a breathtaking panorama of Yunnan's snow peaks, the Yangtze and the distant sacred Meili range. After photos in the thin, freezing air we descend carefully to base camp, then on safety grounds continue down to Haba village (a long 8-12 hr round day in total). Overnight in a Haba village guesthouse. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Day 3: Haba Village|Rest, Descent & Departure
A well-earned relaxed morning in Haba village to recover, celebrate the climb and enjoy the rural Naxi-Tibetan setting with views back up to the peak you stood on. After breakfast we transfer out by private vehicle, a scenic 2-3 hr drive descending toward Tiger Leaping Gorge and on to Shangri-La or Lijiang for your onward journey or flight, with a stop at a gorge viewpoint where you can look across to Haba's summit ridge. This buffer day also protects the itinerary in case poor weather forced the summit bid to be delayed. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations.
