Chenzhou Danxia 3-Day Private Hike: Gaoyiling, Maowangzhai & Xiaodongjiang Mist

★★★★★ 4.5 (141)⏱ 3 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A 3-day private hike through Hunan's lesser-known Danxia country: the wave-rock ridges of Gaoyiling, the wild Maowangzhai canyon and the dreamlike morning mist of the Xiaodongjiang River.

About This Tour

Chenzhou in southern Hunan hides some of China's most photogenic Danxia landforms away from the tourist crowds, and this 3-day private tour for your group only explores them on foot with an English-speaking guide and private vehicle. Where the Danxia of northwest China is arid and monumental, Chenzhou's red-rock scenery is soft and southern, with crimson sandstone ridges twisting and folding like pleated skirts above curling lakes. You hike the undeveloped Maowangzhai trail through a wild crimson canyon and 'one line of sky,' cruise the Cuijiang River beneath cliffs that hide ancient hanging coffins, and walk the dramatic knife-edge ridgeline of Gaoyiling above its lizard-shaped lake. A pre-dawn highlight is the famous Xiaodongjiang River, where cold reservoir water meets warm air to raise a sea of mist that fishermen glide through like a living ink painting. This moderate hike suits active travelers and photographers wanting striking landscapes and genuine off-the-beaten-path scenery in central China. Best from April to October for the river mist. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: Apr-Oct, with Jun-Sep best for the Xiaodongjiang morning mist • Fitness level: moderate; ridge trails have exposed sections and steep up-and-down stretches • The Gaoyiling ridgeline has cliff drops on both sides; a head for heights helps • Early starts required for the river mist; bring a light jacket for cool mornings • Trails can be slippery after rain; wear good hiking shoes • High-speed trains link Chenzhou with Guangzhou and Shenzhen in 1.5-2 hours

Day 1: Arrival in Chenzhou | Free Exploration

Today is an arrival and gathering day. Make your own way to Chenzhou and to the designated hotel to check in; high-speed trains reach Chenzhou from Guangzhou in about 1.5 hours and from Shenzhen in about 2 hours, so an after-work evening train is easy. Early arrivals can warm up on Suxianling, the foremost of Chenzhou's eight scenic spots, climbing past the Suxian Temple and the 'three-wonder tablet' on stone steps once used by the national women's volleyball team for training, and reaching the summit for a view over the whole city. Those arriving later can stroll Yuhou Street, Chenzhou's own 'little Fenghuang,' a 2,200-year-old lane of grey brick and horse-head gables that glows with lantern light and street-food bustle at night. Meals: not included. Overnight: hotel in Chenzhou.

Day 2: Maowangzhai Canyon | Cuijiang Cruise & Gaoyiling Ridge

At 08:30 you drive to Maowangzhai, an undeveloped hiking spot, for about 4km of wild walking that enters the Danxia from field paths, climbs a short steep scramble between towering crimson cliffs with three red-rock peaks encircling you, then descends with help from rocks and hand-cut footholds to a narrow 'one line of sky' and the classic red-rock heartland. Around midday you visit the rebuilt Wayaoping heritage street beside Feitian Hill and the Cuijiang River for a snack and photos, then at 13:00 board a boat to cruise the Cuijiang, gazing up at the Danxia cliffs and the thousand-year hanging coffins tucked into them. In the afternoon you reach the trip's scenic highlight, Gaoyiling, walking a ridge trail along the spine of the hills with sheer drops on either side, the red rock folding like pleated skirts above the lizard-shaped lake far below. You return to the hotel around 16:30. Distance: about 6-8km. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: hotel in Zixing.

Day 3: Xiaodongjiang Mist | Heitan & Departure

Rise before dawn around 06:00 for the Xiaodongjiang River, whose 8-10C reservoir water meets warmer air to create a famous sea of drifting mist, best from April to October and most spectacular June to September in the early-morning window of 5:30-8:30, when fishermen cast their nets through the fog like a moving ink painting. After photographing the mist you have lunch near the scenic area at about 11:30, then at 12:30 drive to the nearby Danxia secret of Heitan, where natural rock 'tan' caverns include a stone arch known as a 'heaven-made bridge' and a great cavern reached by a steep bamboo-forest path, with a near-vertical hand-cut 'sky ladder' and a hidden 'bandit cave' adding to the adventure. Around 14:30 you transfer to Chenzhou West station; book return trains after 16:00, or stay on to explore more of Chenzhou. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: not included (tour ends in Chenzhou).
