Huangshan & Hongcun 3-Day Tour: Yellow Mountain, UNESCO Ancient Villages & Huizhou Fish-Lantern Festival

★★★★★ 4.8 (35)⏱ 3 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A private 3-day journey to UNESCO-listed Huangshan and Hongcun, climbing the legendary Yellow Mountain and joining Huizhou's glowing fish-lantern parades.

About This Tour

This private 3-day tour pairs two of China's most iconic sights: Huangshan (the Yellow Mountain), a UNESCO World Heritage site whose granite spires, twisted pines and rolling seas of cloud inspired centuries of Chinese painting, and the UNESCO-listed Huizhou ancient villages of Hongcun, Zhanqi and Bishan, with their whitewashed walls, dark-tiled roofs and ingenious water systems. Beyond the scenery, you'll dive into living Huizhou culture: make your own traditional fish lantern, feast on a classic 'eight bowls and four plates' village banquet, and join the lantern parades that light up the ancient towns after dark, a heritage folk custom passed down for centuries. With an English-speaking guide and private vehicle, this trip blends a real mountain climb with deep cultural immersion in the heart of old Huizhou. Best in spring, autumn and during winter lantern-festival season. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: spring and autumn; fish-lantern parades are seasonal (festival period) • Fitness level: moderate; Day 2 involves several hours of stair-climbing on Huangshan • Huangshan requires real-name advance booking; on peak holidays Day 2 and Day 3 may be swapped • Cable cars up (Yuping) and down (Yungu) are at your own cost • Bring warm layers, rain gear and good shoes for the mountain • Sunrise, cloud sea and lantern parades depend on weather and local scheduling

Day 1: Zhanqi Village & Huizhou Ancient City Fish-Lantern Festival

Depart Hangzhou around 07:00-07:30 and drive into old Huizhou. The afternoon begins in the photogenic village of Zhanqi, where you enjoy a traditional 'eight bowls and four plates' banquet (included), play interactive village games to earn 'fish coins' for prizes, and take part in a hands-on fish-lantern DIY (one lantern per room, yours to keep), preparing for the night's parade alongside locals. Continue to Huizhou Ancient City, strolling past the rare eight-legged Xuguo Stone Archway, the old 'rich quarter' of Doushan Street and the Huizhou History Museum to learn about Hui-style architecture and the legendary Huizhou merchants. As night falls, the thousand-year-old town ignites with the fish-lantern parade, drums, firecrackers and glowing lanterns winding through the lanes. Meals: D (village banquet). Overnight: Huizhou Ancient City area.

Day 2: Climbing Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) & Hongcun Night Lanterns

After breakfast, travel light and ride the Yuping Cable Car up Huangshan (fare on own). Explore the Yuping area, the Welcoming-Guest Pine, Lotus and Heavenly-Capital Peaks (subject to opening), the Hundred-Step Ladder and One-Line Sky, then the Tianhai area with Feilai Rock, the West Sea Grand Canyon and a ridge cable car up to Bright Summit, Huangshan's second-highest point. Continue through the North Sea scenic area to admire the Peacock, Black Tiger and Beginning-to-Believe pines, Lion Peak and the 'flower-blooming brush' rock. In the late afternoon descend by the Yungu Cable Car (on own) and drive to Hongcun. By night, wander Hongcun's South Lake and Moon Pond and watch the glowing fish-and-flower lantern parade thread through the ancient village. Meals: B (hotel). Overnight: near Hongcun.

Day 3: Hongcun Dawn, Bishan Village & Return to Hangzhou

Rise early for the dreamlike dawn at Qishu Lake, water cypresses rising from morning mist and 'water forest' reflections lit by first light. Then enter UNESCO-listed Hongcun before the crowds: photograph the misty, mirror-still village, an ox-shaped settlement laced with clever waterways, and visit the grand, intricately carved Chengzhi Hall, the 'folk Forbidden City.' After lunch, discover Bishan, a quiet, artsy Huizhou village with old bookstores, design shops, cafes and stylish guesthouses tucked into the countryside. Around 15:00 begin the drive back, arriving in Hangzhou by about 19:00 (later on holiday traffic days). Meals: B (hotel). Overnight: not included.
