Overview

An easy two-day ridge walk over rolling high-alpine grasslands to a tented camp built for sunset, a sea of clouds and sunrise.

About This Tour

Rising unexpectedly from the green hills of western Jiangxi, Mount Wugong (Wugongshan) is crowned by something rare in eastern China: a vast, treeless sweep of high-alpine meadow — roughly 100,000 mu (over 6,000 hectares) of rolling golden grassland riding a long ridge above 1,600 m. It has become the most popular accessible multi-day hike in eastern China, and for good reason. This relaxed two-day, one-night trek combines a cable-car assisted ascent with an airy ridge walk across the open grassland to a comfortable tented camp positioned for the area's two great spectacles: a fiery sunset and, on lucky mornings, a vast sea of clouds glowing pink at sunrise. With gentle gradients, well-marked paths, mobile signal and full camp support, Wugong is the ideal first multi-day hike — perfect for active travellers, families and anyone who wants a real mountain-camping experience without technical difficulty or altitude. Green meadows peak in summer; clear skies and clouds are best in autumn. This is a private tour priced per person. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations. Good to know: • Best season: May-October; summer (Jun-Aug) for greenest meadows, autumn for clearest skies and the best chance of a sea of clouds • Fitness level: easy to easy-moderate; suitable for first-time multi-day hikers and families with active children • Altitude: gentle, ridge sits around 1,600-1,900 m — no altitude concerns • Camping: nights on the ridge are cold and windy even in summer — warm layers, hat and a windproof jacket are essential • Weather: views depend on conditions; cloud, rain or whiteout can occur and the sea of clouds is never guaranteed • Access: nearest hubs are Pingxiang and Yichun; the trailhead is reached by a scenic drive

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Wugong Ridge|Cable Car, Grassland Walk & Tented Camp

We drive to the Wugongshan scenic area and ride the cable car to gain height efficiently, stepping out onto the open ridge at around 1,600 m. From here the trek covers roughly 8-10 km over 4-5 hrs, undulating across the famous high-alpine grassland with a cumulative ascent of about 400 m. The trail rolls over a series of grassy summits — Jinding (Golden Peak) and the wind-rippled meadow knolls — with 360-degree views of green or golden ridgelines folding into the distance. We pause for a trail picnic lunch, then continue to our supported tented camp pitched on the grass for the evening, timing arrival for the long, glowing sunset over the ridges. Camp dinner is served hot. Overnight in a twin camping tent on the ridge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Day 2: Sunrise Sea of Clouds|Descent to Trailhead

We rise before dawn for the highlight of the trip: sunrise from the open ridge, when on clear, humid mornings a vast sea of clouds floods the valleys below and turns gold and rose as the sun breaks the horizon. After a hot breakfast at camp and time for photography, we strike the tents and begin our walk out, covering about 7-9 km over 3-4 hrs of mostly gentle descent along well-built stone paths and meadow trails, passing grazing slopes and viewpoints before reaching the lower cable-car or trailhead. A final lunch is taken near the base before we transfer back to Pingxiang or Yichun for your onward journey. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations.
