Overview

Trek to the hidden Tibetan village of Yubeng beneath sacred Kawagebo, reaching a holy waterfall and glacial lake framed by Yunnan's holiest peak.

About This Tour

Ringed by glaciers and accessible only on foot or by mule, Yubeng is a tiny Tibetan village cradled at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain, whose 6,740m crown, Kawagebo, is the most sacred peak in Yunnan and remains unclimbed out of religious respect. This four-day trek follows part of the ancient pilgrimage circuit around the holy mountain, leading you over a forested pass into a hidden valley of prayer flags, water mills and stone houses. From Yubeng you hike to the Sacred Waterfall, where pilgrims walk three times beneath the spray for blessings, and to the milky-turquoise Ice Lake beneath hanging glaciers. On clear dawns the snows glow amber in the famous "sunlight on the golden mountain." The walking is moderate but at real altitude, rewarded by some of the Himalaya's most unspoiled scenery and a living Tibetan Buddhist culture. It suits active travelers wanting a soulful, immersive mountain trek. Best from late September to November and March to May. This private tour is priced per person with a professional English-speaking guide. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late September-November and March-May; clearest dawns for sunrise on Kawagebo come in autumn and winter • Fitness level: Moderate; expect 4-7 hours of walking daily with sustained climbs and descents • Altitude: The trek crosses Nazongla Pass at about 3,700m and reaches Ice Lake at roughly 3,900m; mild altitude effects are possible, oxygen is carried • Optional horses/mules can be hired for the pass crossings if needed • Pack layers for cold mountain nights, sturdy boots, sun and rain protection; private tour priced per person

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Shangri-La to Feilaisi|Sunset on the Sacred Range

We leave Shangri-La (Zhongdian) and drive roughly 180km (4-5 hours) north along the spectacular Yunnan-Tibet road, crossing the Baima Snow Mountain Pass at around 4,300m before descending toward Deqin. En route we stop at viewpoints over the upper Mekong (Lancang) gorge and the Dongzhulin Monastery. By late afternoon we reach Feilaisi (3,400m), the classic platform facing the entire Meili range, where on clear evenings the 13 white peaks of Kawagebo catch alpenglow. This is largely a scenic transfer day to aid acclimatization, with time to settle in and photograph sunset over the holy mountain. Overnight in a Feilaisi guesthouse with mountain-facing rooms. Breakfast and dinner included.
2

Day 2: Trek to Yubeng|Over Nazongla Pass

After a possible dawn glimpse of sunlight on the golden mountain, we drive down to the Xidang hot-spring trailhead (about 2,650m) and begin the trek into Yubeng. The trail climbs steadily through pine and rhododendron forest for roughly 6km and 1,050m of ascent to Nazongla Pass at around 3,700m, the gateway hung thick with prayer flags. From the pass we descend about 4km into the hidden valley, reaching Upper Yubeng village by mid-afternoon. Total walking is around 11km over 5-7 hours; horses can be hired for the climb. The reward is arriving in a roadless Tibetan hamlet of stone houses, water mills and grazing yaks beneath snow walls. Overnight in a Yubeng guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
3

Day 3: Sacred Waterfall and Ice Lake|Beneath the Glaciers

A full day exploring Yubeng's two holy sites, choosing one as a half day or combining both for a longer outing. From Lower Yubeng we hike about 5km up the Yubeng River valley to the Sacred Waterfall (around 3,650m), where Tibetan pilgrims circle three times beneath the falling water for blessings, passing chortens and mani stones along the way. Strong walkers continue or substitute the steeper trail to the Ice Lake at roughly 3,900m, a milky-turquoise tarn fed by glaciers spilling directly off Kawagebo's flanks. Expect 12-16km and 6-7 hours with 700-900m of cumulative ascent depending on the combination. Both routes deliver close, awe-inspiring glacier views. We return to the village for the night. Breakfast and lunch included.
4

Day 4: Trek Out and Return|Farewell to Kawagebo

On our final morning we trek out of the valley, either retracing the route over Nazongla Pass or taking the alternative trail down the Yubeng River gorge to the Ninong canyon (a scenic 18km descent following the river toward the Mekong). The pass route covers about 9km over 4-5 hours; the gorge route is longer and gentler underfoot. Reaching the road head, our vehicle meets us for the drive back over Baima Pass to Shangri-La, roughly 200km and 5-6 hours, with photo stops as conditions allow. We arrive in Shangri-La in the evening, completing the loop around the foot of Yunnan's holiest mountain. Breakfast and lunch included.
