Overview

Drift through karst water-caves, stand before Asia's largest transnational waterfall, and haggle at a Vietnamese border market on this easy 3-day private escape from Nanning.

About This Tour

Tucked into the lush karst country where China meets Vietnam, this private 3-day tour delivers some of southern China's most photogenic and least-touristed landscapes. The centerpiece is Detian (Ban Gioc) Transnational Waterfall, the largest cross-border falls in Asia, where water tumbles 70 meters in three thundering tiers along the China-Vietnam frontier - you can even raft to within meters of the cascade and straddle the international boundary midstream. Along the way you drift by bamboo raft through the hidden water-caves of Dongnayuwan, scoot on an e-bike beside the willow-lined Mingshi River through storybook pastoral scenery, and explore the historic Friendship Pass with its Qing-era fort and French colonial customs house. A morning at the border market is pure local theater: bargain over a calculator with Vietnamese vendors and taste Vietnamese spring rolls, drip coffee, and chicken pho. With a private English-speaking guide and private vehicle throughout, the pace stays relaxed and flexible - ideal for families, couples, and photographers who want China beyond the big cities. Best enjoyed from spring through autumn when the falls run full and the rice fields glow green. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: March-November, when the waterfall is fullest • Fitness level: easy; light walking and short raft/e-bike rides • Bring your passport ID; this is a sensitive border region • Carry cash for the Vietnamese border market • Currency: small Vietnamese-dong purchases possible at the market

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Nanning - Chongzuo - Dongnayuwan Karst Caves

Meet your guide at Nanning East Railway Station around 11:00 and transfer by private vehicle to Chongzuo (about 1.5 hours), where you pause for a local lunch of Guangxi specialties. Continue one hour to Dongnayuwan, a secret karst water-gorge, and board a bamboo raft to drift deep between thousand-year-old limestone cliffs that loom like crouching beasts on either bank. Along the way, follow clues from Zhuang-ethnic 'NPC' characters in a playful interactive treasure hunt through the caves. In the late afternoon transfer about an hour to your hotel to check in and relax. Evening at leisure to settle in and explore nearby. Meals: lunch (free choice). Overnight: standard hotel near Chongzuo (Venus Resort or similar).

Day 2: Detian Transnational Waterfall & Mingshi Pastoral

After breakfast, drive about 1.5 hours to the star of the trip, Detian (Ban Gioc) Transnational Waterfall - half in China, half in Vietnam - where torrents plunge 70 meters in three roaring tiers, a scene so dramatic it featured in the fantasy drama 'The Journey of Flower.' Take the optional border-river bamboo raft to cross the frontier on the water and approach the falls up close. Enjoy a free lunch in the scenic area; a Vietnamese set of spring rolls and drip coffee is recommended. In the afternoon transfer an hour to Mingshi Pastoral, gliding by e-bike along the tranquil Mingshi River past emerald karst peaks, paddy fields, and sleepy Zhuang villages. Return to the hotel around 18:00 for a free evening. Meals: breakfast included; lunch and dinner free choice. Overnight: same hotel.

Day 3: Friendship Pass Border Market - Nanning

After breakfast, drive about 1.5 hours to the historic Friendship Pass, one of China's most storied border gateways. Step into the borderland atmosphere: barter with Vietnamese vendors over a calculator at the cross-border market (mind your bargaining face!), then wander the century-old gate tower, Qing-dynasty cannon battery, and the French-colonial joint-inspection building, perfect for photos. Enjoy a free border lunch - try chicken pho with a Vietnamese baguette. Around 13:30 transfer back to Nanning East Station (about 3 hours), arriving roughly 16:30 where the tour ends; book onward departures after 17:00. Meals: breakfast included; lunch free choice. Overnight: not included (departure day).
