Overview
Trek the singing golden dunes of Inner Mongolia's Kubuqi Desert, sleep in a desert pod hotel beneath the Milky Way, and chase sunrise over an endless sea of sand.
About This Tour
Roll out across one of China's great deserts on this private 3-day trek through the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia, a vast sea of golden dunes on the southern edge of the Mongolian plateau. Far from the crowds, you'll walk into the silent dunes with provided sand-gaiters, feel the famous 'singing sands' rumble underfoot as you stride down the great slopes, and watch the sun melt into the horizon over a landscape of pure, sculpted gold. Nights are the real magic: you stay in a comfortable en-suite desert container hotel set deep in the dunes, and a professional astronomer leads a stargazing session, pointing out constellations and the Milky Way arcing overhead through telescopes - some of the darkest, clearest skies in northern China. Wake for a desert sunrise, then choose your own adventure: optional off-road dune-bashing in a 4x4 or UTV, sand-sledding, or a guide-led trek along a private route toward the Yin Mountains and the Ant Forest. With an English-speaking guide, private vehicle, and a relaxed pace, this is an unforgettable, family-friendly taste of wild Inner Mongolia. Best from late spring through autumn; days are hot and nights cool, so bring layers and sun protection. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late spring to autumn; large day-night temperature swings • Fitness level: moderate; soft-sand walking of 3-8 km per day • Stargazing may be postponed or cancelled in cloudy weather • Kubuqi sand is very fine - wrap electronics to protect them • Desert lunches and dinners are simple buffet-style (veg, meat, staples)

Day 1: Baotou - Kubuqi Desert, Dune Trek & Stargazing
Meet your guide at Baotou Railway Station around 12:45 and transfer about 140 km (roughly 2 hours) to your desert container hotel set deep in the Kubuqi dunes; check in and rest. Around 15:30 your guide leads a warm-up and gear check (sand-gaiters provided), then you set out on foot into the silent sea of sand - every step sinks softly as the golden dunes glow under the sun. Stride down a great slope to trigger the rumbling 'singing sands,' a sound like a chorus the earth itself performs. Return to the hotel near 18:00 for dinner; afterward watch the sunset from a nearby dune. At about 21:00 a professional astronomer leads a stargazing session, explaining the constellations and showing the Milky Way and moon through telescopes under some of China's darkest skies. Drive: ~140 km, about 2 hours. Walk: ~3 km. Meals: dinner included (simple buffet). Overnight: desert container hotel (en-suite 4-bed room).

Day 2: Desert Sunrise, Off-Road & Private Dune Trek
Rise before dawn (around 05:00) to climb a dune and watch the desert sunrise as the sun bursts from the sea of sand and floods the dunes with gold. After breakfast, enjoy free time: take an optional self-pay off-road ride across the dunes in a 4x4 (Tank 300) or UTV - thrilling climbs and plunges over the sand ridges - or simply sand-sled and shoot photos around the dunes and sand houses. Lunch is served at the desert restaurant. Around 13:30, after a warm-up, set out on a guide-led trek along a private, little-known route with views toward the Yin Mountains and the Ant Forest restoration zone - 6 to 8 km of rolling golden dunes, total silence, and the wind your only company. Return to the hotel in good time for dinner and rest. Walk: ~6-8 km. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner included (simple buffet). Overnight: desert container hotel (en-suite 4-bed room).

Day 3: Kubuqi Desert - Baotou
Enjoy a final desert breakfast and a little free time among the dunes. Around 09:30 check out, gather your group, and board the vehicle for the return drive to Baotou (about 145 km, roughly 2 hours). Arrive at Baotou Railway Station near 11:45, where the tour ends. Allow buffer time for onward travel - book trains or flights after 14:00, and later during holiday peak periods to account for traffic. Recommended local foods in Baotou include Ma Shoujiang's old-town restaurant and Hetao home-style banquet. Drive: ~145 km, about 2 hours. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: not included (departure day).
