Overview

A private three-day road trip along Sichuan's spectacular Provincial Highway 434, through Tibetan grasslands, glacial lakes and views of holy snow peaks including Mt. Gongga.

About This Tour

This private three-day journey follows one of western Sichuan's most breathtaking driving routes, leaving Chengdu for a high plateau of Tibetan grasslands, turquoise lakes and snow-capped giants. Along the legendary Provincial Highway 434 you stop at viewpoints framed by the Yala and Yamu snow mountains, with the 'King of Sichuan Peaks' Mt. Gongga drifting in and out of the clouds. You wander the meadows and streams of Tibetan villages such as Gulong and Xiamalong, visit the photogenic Moon Lake with its braided blue-and-green waterways grazed by yaks and horses, and chase golden sunset light from grassland hilltops near Jiagenba. This is classic Tibetan-plateau scenery, prayer flags, monastery towns and big skies, made comfortable as a private tour with your own vehicle, private English-speaking guide and flexible pacing. Elevations reach around 3,600 m, so the trip suits travelers who want world-class mountain landscapes without strenuous hiking. Best from late spring through autumn. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late spring to autumn (May-October) • Altitude: route reaches ~3,600 m; avoid strenuous activity and bring warm layers even in summer • Fitness level: easy; mostly scenic driving with short walks • High plateau weather changes fast; pack a hat, sunscreen and a warm jacket • Hotel may shift between Tagong, Xinduqiao or Jiagenba depending on local road works
